چکیده
Abstract. The strait studied in this paper, “Sundalagið Norður”, is the northern part of a narrow body seawater separating two largest islands Faroe Islands (Faroes). It has shallow sills both ends and considerably deeper waters between. South southern end there an amphidromic region for semidiurnal tides so that tidal range much lower south than north it. resulting forcing generates periodically varying inflow across sill, but only manages to cross sill. Combined with large input freshwater, gives fjord-like character. To investigate how character affects circulation within its exchanges outside waters, pilot project was initiated simulate dynamics high-resolution ocean model month. simulations show clearly dominance over freshwater (estuarine) wind on timescales up day. On longer timescales, indicate systematic variations net flows (averaged diurnal period) through upper layers. These long-period flow are forced by sea level differences between generated dominant fortnightly monthly constituents (Mf, MSf, Mm, MSm). Harmonic analysis records from tide gauges located off each demonstrates behaviour not artefact it pronounced effects strait. Not does induce (mainly fortnightly) strait, also estuarine characteristics. According simulations, periods southward flow, typically lasting week, have strait-like almost everywhere. Periods northward contrast, more stronger salinity stratification counter-flow deep layer. This induces difference renewal rate water periods, which important consider human utilization especially local aquaculture plant. combination topographic, characteristics creating these rather unusual, known whether similar systems exist elsewhere, tend be masked may easily overlooked.

Tidally-Driven Transport in Accretion Disks in Close Binary Systems
The effects of binary tidal forces on transport within an accretion disk are studied with a time-dependent hydrodynamical model of a two-dimensional isothermal accretion disk. Tidal forces quickly truncate the accretion disk to radii of order half the average radius of the Roche lobe, and excite a two-armed spiral wave that remains stationary in the rotating reference frame of the binary system...
متن کامل“ Submesoscale , tidally - induced biogeochemical patterns in the Strait of Gibraltar ”
Tidal forcing and its fortnightly variation are known to be one of the main regulating agents of physical and biogeochemical signatures in the Strait of Gibraltar and surrounding areas. Samples obtained during spring and neap tides in the region were analyzed to determine the influence of this tidal variation on the submesoscale distribution of water masses and biological elements. During sprin...
متن کاملTidally driven dynamos in a rotating sphere
Large-scale planetary or stellar magnetic fields generated by a dynamo effect are mostly attributed to flows forced by buoyancy forces in electrically conducting fluid layers. However, these large-scale fields may also be controlled by tides, as previously suggested for the star τ -boo, Mars or the Early Moon. By simulating a small local patch of a rotating fluid, Barker & Lithwick (2014) have ...
متن کاملTidally-Triggered Star Formation in Close Pairs of Galaxies
We analyze optical spectra of a sample of 502 galaxies in close pairs and n-tuples, separated by ≤ 50h−1kpc. We extracted the sample objectively from the CfA2 redshift survey, without regard to the surroundings of the tight systems; we re-measure the spectra with longer exposures, to explore the spectral characteristics of the galaxies. We use the new spectra to probe the relationship between s...
متن کاملTidally induced radial-velocity variations in close binaries
A theoretical framework for the determination of tidally induced radial-velocity variations in a component of a close binary is presented. Both the free and the forced oscillations of the component are treated as linear, isentropic perturbations of a spherically symmetric star. Resonances between dynamic tides and free oscillation modes are taken into account by means of the formalism developed...
